How to Use The SHUFFLER®: Gentle Seated Exercise with Move It or Lose It

For many people, getting more movement into the day is not as simple as joining a gym, going for a walk or following a standing exercise class.

Age, mobility, confidence, fatigue, pain, balance, recovery or long periods of sitting can all make traditional exercise feel less accessible. That is exactly where The SHUFFLER® comes in.

In this helpful demonstration video from Move It or Lose It, The SHUFFLER® is shown as a simple way to support gentle lower-limb movement while seated. The device is portable, lightweight and designed to be used from a chair, wheelchair, sofa or other stable seated position.

What is The SHUFFLER®?

The SHUFFLER® is a seated exercise device designed to make movement feel more accessible, practical and enjoyable. It supports straight-line, low-impact lower-limb movement and can be used at home, in care settings, community wellbeing sessions, activity groups, rehabilitation-style environments and everyday seated routines.

The Trainor Jim website describes The SHUFFLER® as exercise equipment designed for seated-only use, with users encouraged to start slowly and build gradually over time. It also recommends building up towards three 10-minute sessions per day, depending on comfort and ability.

Why seated movement matters

Lower-limb movement plays an important role in everyday strength, mobility and confidence. For some people, however, getting started can be the hardest part.

The SHUFFLER® allows users to begin gently while seated, using simple forward, backward and angled movements to activate the legs without needing to stand. This can make exercise feel less intimidating, especially for people who are older, less active, returning to movement or looking for something they can do from their favourite chair.

The device has also been introduced in home, care and community settings, with support from organisations including the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex and the University of Surrey.

Simple exercises shown in the video

The Move It or Lose It video demonstrates several ways to use The SHUFFLER®, starting with simple forward and backward sliding.

This basic movement helps users get used to the device and begin activating the lower-limb muscles at their own pace. From there, the video introduces alternating leg movements, where one foot moves forward while the other moves back.

It also shows a V-shaped skating movement, which changes the angle of the feet and encourages the legs to work in a slightly different way. Another variation focuses on moving the feet in and out to support hip activation.

For those ready for a little more challenge, the video also includes a coordination exercise, moving one foot forwards while the other moves out to the side. There is also an incline option, where the device is positioned to create a slightly more challenging movement.

These exercises are designed to be simple, adaptable and easy to build into a regular seated routine.

Start slowly and build confidence

One of the most important messages in the video is to start gently.

The aim is not to push hard straight away. Instead, users are encouraged to keep The SHUFFLER® nearby, perhaps next to a favourite chair, and use it little and often.

Over time, the goal may be to build up to 10-minute sessions, three times a day, but this should always be based on comfort, confidence and individual ability.

If anything feels painful or uncomfortable, stop and seek advice from a suitable healthcare professional.

Who could The SHUFFLER® be useful for?

The SHUFFLER® may be useful for people who want to bring more gentle seated movement into daily life, including older adults, people with limited mobility, those who spend long periods sitting, and anyone looking for a simple way to support lower-limb activity from a seated position.

It may also be suitable for care homes, community groups, wellbeing programmes, sports clubs, workplace wellbeing settings and activity providers looking for inclusive exercise options.

For organisations, The SHUFFLER® can be introduced as part of seated exercise sessions, movement breaks, activity programmes or gentle group demonstrations.

A practical way to move more

What makes The SHUFFLER® appealing is its simplicity.

It does not require screens, apps, complicated settings or a large amount of space. It is quiet, portable and can fit into everyday routines, whether that is watching television, joining a group session or taking a few minutes to move during the day.

For people who feel unsure about exercise, that simplicity matters. Sometimes the best movement is the movement that feels achievable enough to begin.
