The UK’s Chief Medical Officers have updated their physical activity guidance, reinforcing a message that has become increasingly important over recent years:
Every movement counts.
For many people, hearing the words “exercise” or “physical activity” immediately brings to mind running, gyms or intense workouts. But the latest guidance makes it clear that improving health doesn’t have to start there.
Instead, the focus is on helping people move more throughout the day, reduce long periods of sitting, and find ways to be active that suit their own abilities and circumstances.
Moving more, whatever your starting point
The updated guidance recognises something we’ve known for a long time: there is no one-size-fits-all approach to physical activity.
Whether someone is recovering from surgery, living with reduced mobility, managing a long-term health condition or simply finding it harder to stay active as they get older, doing something is almost always better than doing nothing.
The biggest improvements often come from replacing periods of inactivity with regular movement that feels achievable and sustainable.
Why this matters
For millions of people, the advice to “exercise more” isn’t the challenge.
The challenge is finding a way to move that feels possible.
Many people are excluded from traditional forms of exercise because of pain, fear of falling, limited mobility, fatigue or a lack of confidence. Others simply spend large parts of the day sitting because that’s what their daily life demands.
That doesn’t mean movement isn’t important. In fact, it makes it even more important.
Where the SHUFFLER® fits
The SHUFFLER® was designed to fill a gap that we kept seeing.
Not everyone can go for a walk. Not everyone feels comfortable in a gym. Not everyone can use conventional exercise equipment.
But many people can benefit from gentle, seated lower-limb movement.
The SHUFFLER® allows people to keep their legs moving while sitting in their usual chair, whether they’re watching television, reading, chatting with family or working from home.
There are no batteries to charge, no apps to download and nothing complicated to learn.
Just a simple way to introduce more movement into moments that would otherwise be completely sedentary.
Making movement part of everyday life
One of the strongest themes within the updated guidance is that physical activity doesn’t have to happen in dedicated exercise sessions.
Small amounts of movement throughout the day all add up.
For many people, creating a routine that fits naturally into everyday life is far more realistic than trying to commit to lengthy exercise programmes.
That’s why we believe accessible movement matters.
When movement feels achievable, people are more likely to stick with it.
Looking ahead
As our population ages and more people live with long-term health conditions, creating accessible ways to stay active has never been more important.
The updated UK physical activity guidelines reinforce an important message: every movement counts, and everyone deserves the opportunity to move in a way that works for them.
At Trainor Jim, that’s exactly what we’re working towards.
